The Christmas tree tradition

The Christmas tree tradition is age-old. It began with pagan custom, and did not become a part of Christian celebrations until the 17th century, making its first appearance in Alsace. In this region, the fir tree was first adorned with apples, sweets and small cakes at Christmas time. Lights were first used to decorate the Christmas tree solely under the reign of Louis XV, who had many in Versailles. Since then, the Christmas tree has become an essential part of tradition during winter festivities.

When should I put up my Christmas tree?

To make the most of the magic of Christmas, put up your Christmas tree on 1st December at the earliest and make sure that it is ready before the 6th December, for Saint Nicholas day.

How should I decorate my fir tree?

There are lots of ways to decorate your Christmas tree! Here is some advice:

• Choose a colour scheme: red and gold, white and silver, or go natural… Opt for traditional Christmas colours or go for a more original theme according to your desires.
• Start with string lights: lights are a key element of Christmas tree decoration and should be put on first. The decorations you add afterwards will be even more sparkly!
• Add decorations: baubles, pine cones, wooden rounds, cinnamon sticks, red and coloured knots, ribbons, figurines... or personalised accessories such as children’s little notes or photos.
• Finish with the top: add the finishing touch, with the Christmas star.
