This superb variety of orchid is very easy to grow. It can flower in any season. The flowered stem, usually single, grows from the base of a pseudobulb (the orchid’s water reserve).
The following care tips will help your recipient enjoy this plant for as long as possible:
- Light: Oncidiums with pseudobulbs generally dislike strong light. They belong to the family of orchids with relatively thin leaves and too much sun quickly marks and reddens them. Don’t move them away from a well-lit window but soften the light with a sem-translucent curtain from Spring to Autumn.
- Temperature: Between 16° and 25°C.
- Watering: Once a week, don’t hesitate to soak the plant if it is stable in its pot: 5 to 10 minutes for a normal soak, 1 or 2 minutes for a light soak. In all cases, don’t forget to wet the fine roots that grow outside the pot.
- Fertilizer: Regular fertilization at low doses will be beneficial almost throughout the year, at approximately every second watering. In the winter period, if the oncidium is not in flower, lower the frequency to once a month or zero.
- Repotting: Every 2 years, when the new shoots appear, in the Spring or early Autumn.
- Outside: Your oncidium will also be happy outside during the summer months. If you wish, you can put them out on your balcony or terrace or in your garden, in a shady spot, taking care to hydrate the roots that grow outside the pot.
